12 Days of Techmas: Day 4 is the Raspberry Pi

December 11, 2014

At Sealevel, we are big fans of educating children in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. One of the main components of many of the careers in these fields is computers but not every child has access to computers. The Raspberry Pi Foundation, an educational charity based in the UK, has created a device to help change that.

The Raspberry Pi is a low-cost computer that works with any keyboard, mouse, and TV or computer monitor. This small device has a wide array of capabilities, including browsing the internet, word-processing, gaming, making spreadsheets and more. Children can learn how computers work, learn programming languages like Python and Scratch, or play videos.

Why we love it:

  • Its small size makes it portable and easy to utilize
  • The Make resources page offers tutorials on creating various projects, including making a Santa game with code, wiring buttons to play sounds, and making a stop motion animation rig with a push button
  • The Teach resources page offers teachers several lessons for students, including HTML CSS coding and networking lessons
  • They offer two camera modules that allow for video and still photographs, including a NoIR module that works great for dark-lighting photos or video

Children thrive on and are excited by exploration. Products like the Raspberry Pi allow them to figure things out for themselves, which encourages them to learn.
