DESIGN West 2013 Wrap Up

DESIGN West 2013 (formerly Embedded Systems Conference) wrapped up last Thursday after three days of exhibits and over 150 technical lectures. The show was well attended, and a number of the visitors to our booth commented on the technical sessions they attended. In particular I heard about Mayim Bialik’s great keynote. Mayim is not only an actress on The Big Bang Theory, but also a very accomplished neuroscientist.

R2loresIt started off a little rocky for the Sealevel team.  Our booth was lost in transit, and after making backup plans to express all new equipment, it arrived an hour before the show opened on Tuesday. My colleagues came together like an Olympic team to assemble everything, shower, change and be ready for visitors in less than an hour!

The Sealevel booth featured two of our new COM Express-based industrial computers. The Relio R2 and Relio R3 are solid-state computers with options of Intel Atom, i3, or i7 processor.  These computers are designed for demanding applications using solid-state SATA hard drives and without cooling fans to ensure maximum reliability.

The Relio R2 comes with up to 4 configurable I/O expansion slots for analog, digital, and serial I/O options. The Relio R3 comes has a 3U rackmount solution with a 7” touchscreen and up to 18 configurable I/O expansion slots.

Both of these products are based on a COM Express architecture. This architecture combines a highly integrated module containing the processor, video, memory, USB, and Ethernet with an application specific baseboard design. The baseboard is customized with the exact I/O and expansion features needed for the application.

We had a few of the custom carrier board designs in our booth that Sealevel has completed for various OEM customers. People were commenting how efficient the layout can be with a COM Express carrier board design and how the elimination of cables really makes for a robust design.

We are excited about this hybrid architecture because it allows our customers to benefit from Sealevel’s vast engineering library of designs from 27 years of designing custom I/O solutions for the embedded market.

It was great to enjoy what was left of each day outside in the great San Jose weather. Coming down from Portland, OR, I needed a dose of vitamin D from the sunlight. I enjoy this show because it is always like a reunion for me because of all the old colleagues, customers, competitors, and friends that you get to see again. That is a wrap for DESIGN West 2013.
