Greenville County Museum of Art Celebrates the 25th Anniversary Antiques Show

Good things are always happening at the Greenville County Museum of Art.  From one of the world’s greatest artists and South Carolina native, Jasper John’s paintings and prints to Andrew Wyeth’s masterful watercolors, Upstate South Carolina can be proud of such a well-balanced and informed American art collection.

I joined the board of GCM in July and was honored to do so.  Both of my parents have served on the museum board, my mom even served as president, so I was happy to represent our family and a place that was special to me as a kid.  New to the upstate and a lover of art, my mom volunteered at the museum as a docent in the 1980’s.  I made rounds with the guards while she gave tours.  It was a magical experience for a little girl in a big museum.  I was privy to visit the vault, peered in on architectural lectures and gazed at pottery firing in the kiln.  In college, I returned to the museum to follow in my mom’s footsteps, giving tours to elementary school kids. Even today when I enter the museum, I’m greeted by the smell of such an important place and educational memories.

This week, the Museum celebrates the 25th anniversary Antiques Show fundraiser.  Twenty-one select dealers will offer formal and country antiques, fine arts, and oriental rugs, linen, silver, and many other treasures.  The Antiques Show benefits the Museum’s collection of American Art, and during the 2010 event visitors can enjoy exhibitions of not only John’s and Wyeth, but also A Portrait of Greenville, a multifaceted look at the upstate’s largest city and the projects completed during the past 25 years.  While tickets to the antiques exhibition are $8 ($5 in advance), admission to the art exhibitions is “always absolutely free”.

You can always check out this fine arts organization online or make time to visit Greenville County Museum of Art. During your next visit to Sealevel, take a look around at some of the works on display. Thanks to Susan O’Hanlan’s art appreciation, we have a pretty impressive collection.
