Hamster Wheel: From the UK to Sealevel

After many years in this industry, slogging it out every day, things began to go stale.  I mean, business was good, projects were interesting and life in the sleepy town of Stone, England was, well not that exciting. I can only liken it to a hamster wheel — life going round and round.  Every day became Groundhog Day, that same song on the radio, the same faces in the pub on a Friday night.  Round and round.  I needed change, and change is what I got.

We’ll start back in 2002 when a chance meeting with Ben O’Hanlan (Sealevel’s VP of Business Development) would later turn out to change my life forever.  At the time I was head of sales for a U.K. distributor of embedded computer systems, who sold the Sealevel range.  After a few years working together from afar, we managed to increase the sales in that territory by quite a percentage – things were working out well.  One evening, after a bad day in the office, an off-the-cuff remark aimed at Ben (to the tune of “got any jobs going over there”) led to 4 years worth of discussions.  And for those who don’t know me, patience doesn’t come naturally.

Finally, 2009 was our year.  The Visa application was a grueling process of lottery tickets and pot luck, however my chocolate bar included that gold ticket.  This was May 2009, and by September my wife and I stepped off the wheel, packed our bags and waved goodbye to the Staffordshire countryside, in search of exciting times ahead on distant land.  So far, the U.S. has met all our expectations and feels like a home from home.  I guess the moral of the story can be summed up in the words of Woodrow Wilson: “All things come to him who waits — provided he knows what he is waiting for.”
