Upgrading Command-and-Control Military Communications

Overview

A client partner reached out to Sealevel for a product to be used in aerospace defense communications. The application is for the system that connects commercial radar with military radar. That radar network conducts air surveillance, identification of objects in airspace, and security in support of North American homeland defense. It is the center of air defense command-and-control for North America. The network has been heavily updated in the last 10 years, with all new communications systems intended to integrate information between multiple US Military branches.

As part of this mission-critical operation, robust synchronous communications are required. They must be precise and accurate, reflecting rapid, real-time updates with clarity. Reliability and ease of use are high priorities. The software operating these communications must have adequate support. As well, the hardware for these systems must be standard, interoperable and configurable.

Key Application Requirements

  • Conduct robust synchronous communications
  • Reliable and configurable
  • Easy-to-integrate upgrades

The Sealevel Solution

Sealevel engineers recommended Sealevel’s 5402e PCI Express synchronous serial interface.

Designed using the popular Zilog Z85230 Enhanced Serial Communication Controller (ESCC), the synchronous serial adapter is an ideal solution for military applications that require robust synchronous communications.

The 5402e is highly configurable, providing four ports individually for RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, RS-530, RS-530A or V.35. Specifically in RS-232 mode, all common modem control signals are implemented for compatibility. For easy implementation, a fan-out cable is included that terminates the onboard 100-pin SCSI-style connector to four DB-25M connectors. The software support is provided through Sealevel’s SeaMAC synchronous serial driver. However, other software protocols are supported, along with other operation modes. The device is compliant with RoHS and WEEE directives, as well as PCI Express X1. Its standard height fits most PCI Express slots.

Backed by a lifetime warranty and tested to exceed requirements, Sealevel’s American-made products are reliable and proven. They guarantee the integrity of mission-critical communications and advance sensitive military operations.

Mission Critical Military Applications

For over 30 years, Sealevel has exceeded the expectations for every major US and Allied military contractor including Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, BAE, Boeing, L3Harris, General Dynamics, NAVWAR, NAVAIR and SOCOM.
