Hardware Design Engineer - PCB Design Focus

Overview

Sealevel Systems designs and manufactures industrial computing and I/O solutions for industrial automation, defense, aerospace, transportation, and communications. All design, manufacturing, and testing are performed in-house at our facility in Liberty, South Carolina.

We are seeking a Hardware Design Engineer with a primary focus on printed circuit board (PCB) design to develop next-generation industrial computing and I/O products. You will design leading-edge solutions for both off-the-shelf standard products and custom, ruggedized systems used in defense, energy, transportation, public safety, and other critical industries.

Reporting Relationship

The position will report to the Director of Engineering.

Objectives and Responsibilities

  • Strong understanding of high-speed digital design, including transmission lines, signal and power integrity, and RF communications
  • Strong understanding of DC-DC switching power supply concepts, including layout of high-speed switching current loops
  • Experience with industrial communication interfaces such as RS-232/422/485, CAN, and 24V digital I/O
  • Familiarity with the implementation of analog-to-digital conversion circuits
  • Experience designing field-side interfaces that tolerate noisy power, long cable runs, and wiring faults
  • Experience designing galvanically isolated interfaces (digital isolators, optocouplers, isolated power) for serial and digital I/O
  • Experience designing electronics for extended industrial temperature ranges (e.g., −40°C to +85°C), including component selection and derating
  • Understanding of ESD, surge, and EFT protection techniques for exposed I/O, such as TVS diodes and filtering

Competencies

  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills, including use of high-speed oscilloscopes and other common lab equipment
  • Experience designing and debugging low-voltage DC-DC power supplies using discrete components or integrated modules
  • Understanding of signal integrity and power integrity principles for high-speed digital designs
  • Experience creating schematics and managing component libraries using industry-standard EDA tools (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD/Allegro, or equivalent)

Style

  • Organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated
  • Comfortable operating in a rapidly growing environment
  • Adapts readily to a variety of tasks and learns quickly
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

The above describes the general job requirements. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties required; other assignments will occur.

Previous Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering.
  • 5 years of professional hardware design experience.
  • Design experience with common computer standards such as PCI Express, PCI, USB, SATA, I2C, SPI, Ethernet, and video interfaces.
  • Experience designing high-speed routing for interfacing to Intel x86 processors and embedded microcontrollers (MCUs).
